Self-care is an essential aspect of our well-being, yet many of us struggle to make ourselves a priority and focus on self-care even when we are feeling overwhelmed and stressed. In our fast-paced and demanding world, it can be challenging to prioritize our own needs, but it is vital that we do so for our overall health and happiness.
I was motivated to write this post after being introduced to an “end-of-day stress relief” routine on Alexa. I tried it for the first time this past week. It is absolutely wonderful and I've scheduled it for 5 pm each day. I'm amazed I am just discovering it now since Alexa tends to run much of my home!
I have also been reflecting on the past few years and, now being in a better headspace, I realize how much I neglected my own self-care and how much time I wasted doing mindless things while in isolation. Instead of seizing the opportunities that were so readily available to me — to all of us, online and otherwise — to improve my life, I spent numerous hours binge-watching eight-season or fifteen-season series and so many other shows and movies and scrolling through social media feeds.
It was only recently that I discovered what gems resources like YouTube are for learning and self-improvement; I have traditionally accessed it only for entertainment. Continuous learning and trying new things have had a measurable effect on my happiness.
Besides distractions, I believe that one of the reasons we find it difficult to focus on self-care is that we are unable to let go of the guilt that often comes with taking time for ourselves. Society has ingrained in us that we must be productive and focused on work and responsibilities, leaving little room for self-care. As a result, many of us feel guilty or selfish when we take time to focus on our own needs.
Another reason we find it challenging to prioritize self-care is due to never-ending to-do lists. With so many tasks and responsibilities to attend to, taking the time to focus on self-care can seem like a luxury that we simply cannot afford. This can lead to feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, and stress, making it even more difficult to prioritize self-care. Ironically, we experience stress over self-care, which is an integral stress mitigator, and all of this becomes a vicious cycle.
Despite these difficulties, we must prioritize self-care and make ourselves a priority. By incorporating self-care into our daily routines, we can reduce stress levels, improve our physical and mental health, and enhance our overall well-being. The below list was compiled to remind me what constitutes self-care. I hope you find this list a beneficial reference in your efforts as well.
